Table Mountain, the newest 7 th wonder!

I usually have a lot of fears! Going to South Africa made me face most of them!  I don’t like airplanes, am terrified of heights and get terrible motion sickness! I was able to battle through all these things and actually enjoy my trip with much help and coaxing from my Aunt.

Table Mountain is just one of those things you have to do when you go to Cape Town, South Africa.  It is a significant tourist attraction with many visitors using the cable cars or hiking to the top. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park. The view from the top of Table Mountain has been described as one of the most epic views in Africa.  The quickest way to the top (1,084.6m or 3558ft) is by Cable Car.

Of course I had to go, but once I actually arrived and saw the cable car that was going to take us to the top of mountain I tried to back out and run away!  My wonderful, loving, mean (jk) supportive Aunt pulled me on the cable car!  Here are a few pics of me facing my terrors and actually enjoying the outcome, with the most breathtaking views!

My Trip to the Home Land

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa.  My parents brought my sisters and I over to the states when I was 8!  Ever since we left I have felt like a piece of my soul was missing.  I still have a lot of family back home and don’t get to see them that much anymore.  They make a trip over here every couple of years, but it’s just not the same.

In July this year I was able to finally make the long journey home with my husband by my side!!

About to Liftoff

Our journey was a long one!!  We flew to Heathrow which was about a 9 1/2 hour-long flight with a 8 hour layover.  That was pure torture!! Then an 11 hour flight to Cape Town!

I am going to break up our experiences into different blog posts, because we spent about 10 days there and did so many cool and amazing things that it would be way too much to put all into one post!

Thanks to my wonderful Aunty Cathy and Uncle Kevin for making our trip so much fun!!

So Stay Tuned………….

Vanilla Extract~Natural Mosquito Repellent

Who isn’t scared of getting West Nile Virus?

We have been spending a lot of time outdoors lately because of my girls playing soccer. At least three nights out of our week we are on the soccer fields, and right during the buzzing hour!

I absolutely hate spraying ‘Deet Bug Spray’ on my kids!  We are always closing our eyes, doing the one-two-three don’t breathe drill, or coughing and choking from this stuff.

Another soccer mom came up and told me that an elderly lady told her to use Vanilla Extract!!

After researching this a bit, it seems that many other people also believe this to be true.  The one thing I have found though is it has to be Pure Vanilla Extract, the other stuff has sugar added which obviously would not repel any bug!  There are two ways to use it.  You can add it directly to the pressure points, like wrists and neck, or you can dilute it with water (50/50 mixture) and spray it on.

We will be trying this out at soccer practice tonight and I will let you know how it goes!

Oops forgot to add, the only down side I have seen to this method is that it only last for 30-45 min!  So you will have to re-apply!

Do you have anything natural that you have found to work?

Best Tool for Spray Painting

I am so glad to have found this thing! I am in the middle of spray painting some twin beds, and after the first coat of primer I realized that it was really not much fun. My fingers and hands were aching from holding the can. I saw this product when purchasing my spray paint, but thought it was probably unnecessary, boy was I wrong!! When returning to buy more paint I decided to buy this, and it made my life so much easier! Best thing ever and well worth the $6-$7!!!

My New Mailbox

So this is a picture of how ugly my mailbox looked when we bought our house!

I went and looked at replacing it, but didnt like anything I saw at the hardware stores.  This thing was an eye sore to me, and I just couldnt take it anymore.

I decided maybe all it needed was a fresh coat of spray paint.  So I ran to the store and bought a can of Rustoleum Metal Spray Paint in red.  First I took off the ugly hanging pieces (which have no purpose) then washed and dried the mailbox off really good.  I applied 3 coats of paint and let it dry all day.

I like this mailbox because it is a little different than the generic ones I have seen.  The emblem in the middle does set it apart!

Much Better!  Curb appeal just went up in my book!

We are trying to be healthier as a family, and make better food choices.  But not all healthy foods taste good.  The first time we ever made Quinoa I wasnt impressed at all, and quite frankly wasnt sure what all the fuss was about.

Quinoa is perhaps one of the most perfect non-animal sources of protein on the planet. What makes quinoa unique is that it is the only plant based source of complete protein. “Complete” means that it contains all 9 of the essential amino acids that are crucial to human function and health

A couple nights ago I decided to make it again, but a little different.  I made it the way I usually make my risotto!

I chopped up one onion, and 3 cloves of garlic.  Sauteed it in olive oil until it was almost transparent.  Then I threw in two cups of quinoa and mixed it up then added four cups of chicken broth.  Bring it to a boil, then simmer for about 20 minutes.

It was delicious!  Or has my husband would say it was the “Quin-bomb.”

Landscape Mulch Project

I saw this idea on Pinterest and decided to try it, especially since Lowes was having such a good special on mulch!

Our front yard is lacking a bit and needs a little refreshing, of course there is still lots left to do but here is what we did today.

Here is a before shot!

And another, my beds were just full of dirt, ants and weeds, YUCK!

A pin on Pinterest said that if you put some newspaper under your mulch its bio degradeable and keeps the weeds gone, actually is supposed to kill them after 18 months completely! ( I will keep you updated on that part, lol)

So we picked up some free Greensheets (the greensheet brings you buyers!) and laid them all down.

Then we just poured the mulch over on top and evened it out!  Such a simple project, but makes a huge differnce to my curb appeal!

What do you think?
The whole project took me about 15-20 min!!

Family Day Trip To Fossil Rim

I am super excited because we have finally figured out a way to have fun little trips even with my husbands busy work schedule!  He is a car salesman so it’s very difficult for him to take time off work and he only has Sundays off.

This Sunday we decided to take a drive to Glen Rose, Texas.  We had so much fun on our trip that we are going to start taking regular Sunday day trips!!

We woke up pretty early to get the kids all ready to go, and headed out to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Its a drive through zoo, where you can feed the animals from your car! It took us about an hour and 45 minutes to get there, which isnt too bad.

The kids were super excited!  The whole thing took us a couple of hours, which was much longer than I anticipated.  Half way through there is a cafe, gift shop and little petting zoo area which is nice to get out and stretch your legs!  Unfortunately my camera died half way through the trip 😦

We saw all kinds of buck, deer, antelope, zebra’s, ostrich, emu, giraffe and rhino.

The emu came right up to our window at one point and man that thing is very scary!

Thats just a few of the animals we feed from the car, if I posted all the pics it would be a little overwhelming lol!

The best part of the whole trip was when we saw the giraffe and they stuck their heads into the sunroof for food!

They are the only animal you are allowed to feed with your hands.  It was a little wierd though when that purple toungue touched your hand, ewwww!

The trip was a success!  The kids had a blast and of course so did we!

We want some ideas on more places to go in Texas that could be day trips, so feel free to post any places that you have been to or recommend.

Favorite Paper Towels

I know, I know this probably sounds super silly, but I have to share my find!  I have always wondered what the best paper towel out there is, and I have finally found it.  I read in a Real Simple article that Viva Paper Towels were rated one of the best in some product survey they did.  So when I ran out of paper towels this last time, I thought what the heck let me try them.  When I first opened the package I wasn’t too sure about the way they felt, but I will tell you they out perform any paper towel I have ever used!  I love to clean with paper towels but they always fall apart.  I cleaned my whole master bathroom with just two paper towels!!!

I like the Choose a size ones, because I feel like a roll just lasts longer!

Try it and let me know what you think!!

Texas Rangers Dress from a Tshirt

My husband and I are HUGE Texas Rangers Fans! I saw this idea on Pinterest and there a few people making these and selling them on the internet. I have been wanting to purchase one to wear at a game, but then decided maybe I could make one myself.

I searched the internet for a couple different tutorials, and all were a little different. So I just kind of hodge podged them together.

I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a shirt, and a couple of things like thread and elastic. Then I went to Hobby Lobby for the trim for the bottom of the dress.

I bought an XLarge Mens Shirt.  Actually to be completely honest, I bought two one for me and one for my husband, but the first round of trying to do this I messed up and had to steal my hubby’s shirt to start over!  I cut off the sleeves and the collar.  The first one I tried I ended up cutting the name off on the back, and I wanted the name to show, so that’s why I started over.

After the first messed up shirt, my frustration level was at an all time high, and I almost gave up, so that’s why there are no more pictures from this point!

I just sewed down the sides of the dress and kept trying it on and sewing more until it fit properly.  Then on the top I folded the seam over a 1/2 inch and sewed all the way around but leaving a small opening to pull the elastic through.  Then I sewed the elastic together and sewed the whole back up.

Next I sewed the hemline and attached the ruffle on the bottom.

Here is the finished product!  It’s not perfect by any means, and was still a little tight and short for my liking!

And here is what the back looked like:
